Fisher Investments Press author Michael Hanson believes there are four big ideas you should know when thinking about how brains work:
- The triune brain — reptilian, limbic, and the neocortex
- Brains are hierarchical and most neural activity is unconscious
- Modular instinct
- Neural plasticity
The Triune Brain
In the 1950s, Dr. Paul D. MacLean theorized brains have three main systems that evolved over time. Fisher Investments Press author Michael Hanson understands human brains as we know them today aren’t "new"—they evolved over many eons, and a lot of that change happened in different species altogether. Much of the neural system we have is a leftover from the neural systems of our evolutionary lineage. In other words, brains didn’t "reinvent" themselves each time a new species arrived. Instead, new brains built upon the old system or made some minor modifications. The new is based on the old. MacLean's theory is somewhat crude and outdated as a formal scientific model, but remains a useful framework for understanding brain basics and development.
